DELIVERY INSURANCE
šš¦ A READER BROUGHT UP DELIVERY INSURANCEāAND WE WANTED TO EXPAND ON IT.
Their comment raised an important question: Are drivers actually covered while using their personal vehicles for work?
Having insuranceāor even an Uber/Lyft rideshare endorsementādoesnāt automatically mean every delivery app and every stage of the trip is covered. Some endorsements include deliveries, but coverage varies by policy and state.
Every driver should check directly with their insurance company or licensed agent and review their own policy. Explain that you deliver packages, groceries, or meals, and name EVERY platform you use.
š± WHAT DO THE PLATFORMS PROVIDE?
š¦ AMAZON FLEX
Amazonās FAQ says it provides commercial auto insurance at no additional cost while actively delivering during a block, except in New York. It includes liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection, and contingent comprehensive/collision coverage. Conditions applyācheck your current policy certificate for limits, deductibles, and requirements. Donāt assume this protects your entire drive from home and back.
š WALMART SPARK
Sparkās published terms require drivers to maintain their own auto liability insurance and other coverage appropriate for their deliveries. The terms also say Walmart makes occupational accident insurance available. That is injury-related coverage, not a promise to repair your vehicle. The terms reviewed donāt establish a platform auto policy comparable to Flexāsāask Spark for any coverage applicable to your state and situation.
š UBER / LYFT
Both provide auto liability coverage tied to your status in their apps. Coverage changes between waiting for a request and heading to pickup or carrying a passenger. Conditional comprehensive/collision coverage may protect your car during accepted trips if you already carry those coverages personally; the standard deductible is generally $2,500, with exceptions. State and vehicle-program rules vary. Their platform insurance doesnāt automatically follow you onto Spark or Flex.
š DOORDASH
DoorDash provides third-party auto liability coverage during qualifying delivery activity. That addresses covered injuries or damage to **other people**, while damage to your own car remains your responsibility through your insurer. Coverage periods and limits vary by state; some states also have coverage while waiting for offers.
š ASK YOUR INSURER THIS:
āI use my vehicle for Amazon Flex, Spark, DoorDash, and/or Uber/Lyft. Please confirm coverage for each platform while waiting, driving to pickup, completing trips, and returning undelivered items. What covers my own vehicle, what deductibles apply, and do I need a delivery endorsement or commercial auto policy?ā
Get the answer in writing, including the applicable policy language.
Your insurance needs to match how you use your vehicle. An approved insurance upload is not the same as confirmed delivery coverage.
What did your insurer recommend when you told them which apps you drive for?
